These spooky witch finger cookies are tender, buttery, and not too sweet, with a hint of almond that pairs perfectly with slivered almond ‘nails.’ They look creepy but taste delicious, making them the perfect Halloween treat that kids and adults love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • ½ cup slivered almonds
  • Red food coloring or raspberry jam (optional, for a bloody cuticle effect)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl halfway through.
  2. Add the wet ingredients. Beat in the egg and almond extract until fully combined. The mixture might look slightly curdled, but that’s normal. Scrape the bowl again.
  3. Mix in the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Chill the dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and flatten it into a disk. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 days.
  5. Preheat and prep. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  6. Shape the fingers. Take a small piece of dough (about 1 tablespoon) and roll it into a log shape about 3 inches long. Gently taper one end to look like a fingertip, and make the other end slightly wider. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, spacing fingers about 2 inches apart.
  7. Create the knuckles. Using the back of a butter knife or a small offset spatula, gently press 2-3 lines across each finger to create knuckle creases. Do not press too hard.
  8. Add the fingernails. Press one slivered almond into the tapered end of each finger, pointed end outward. Press gently so it stays in place. If needed, dab a tiny bit of water on the dough before pressing.
  9. Bake. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the cookies are set and the bottoms are just barely golden. The tops should still be pale.
  10. Cool. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Add the ‘blood’ (optional). If desired, dab a tiny bit of red food coloring or raspberry jam at the base of the fingernail using a toothpick for precision.

Notes

Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes to make shaping easier. Keep hands cool if dough gets sticky. Vary finger shapes for a more realistic look. Watch bake time closely to avoid browning. Use unsalted butter to control salt level.
