A simple and flexible burger bar setup perfect for busy nights, casual gatherings, and customizable homemade meals with juicy patties and fresh toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds (680 g) ground beef, 80/20 blend
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped or grated
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 6 burger buns, brioche or classic sesame
  • Butter or olive oil for toasting
  • Leafy lettuce (romaine or butter lettuce), washed and dried
  • Tomato slices, ripe and firm
  • Red onion rings, thinly sliced
  • Pickles, sliced (dill or bread & butter style)
  • Cheese slices (cheddar, American, or Swiss)
  • Avocado slices or guacamole (optional)
  • Bacon strips, cooked crisp (optional)
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • Mayonnaise or aioli
  • BBQ sauce
  • Potato chips or sweet potato fries (optional)
  • Coleslaw or simple green salad (optional)
  • Pickled jalapeños or banana peppers (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, about 5 minutes.
  2. Divide mixture into 6 equal portions (~4 ounces each). Shape each into a ¾-inch thick patty with a slight indentation in the center. Set aside, about 5 minutes.
  3. Preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat (~375°F). Add oil if using skillet.
  4. Cook patties on hot surface for 4 minutes without moving. Flip and cook another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness (internal temp 160°F). Add cheese slice 1 minute before done if desired. Total cook time 8-9 minutes.
  5. Lightly butter insides of buns and toast on grill or skillet for 1-2 minutes until golden and crisp.
  6. Arrange toppings and condiments in separate bowls. Place cooked patties and toasted buns nearby for self-assembly, about 5 minutes.
  7. Encourage guests to build their own burgers. Serve with preferred sides like chips or salad.

Notes

Do not overmix the meat to keep patties tender. Create a small indentation in patties to prevent puffing. Toast buns just before serving to avoid sogginess. Let cooked patties rest briefly to redistribute juices. Use a meat thermometer to ensure safe cooking temperature. Avoid pressing patties while cooking to retain juiciness.
