This one-bowl chocolate chip pumpkin bread is incredibly moist, tender, and studded with melty chocolate. It comes together with simple pantry ingredients and minimal cleanup, making it the perfect fall comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup (240g) pumpkin puree
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (60ml) milk
  • 1 cup (175g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides. Lightly grease exposed ends.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves for about 20 seconds.
  3. Add granulated sugar and brown sugar; whisk until no lumps remain.
  4. Make a well in the center. Add pumpkin puree, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and milk. Stir gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Fold in ¾ cup of chocolate chips with 3-4 broad strokes. Reserve remaining ¼ cup for topping.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips on top.
  7. Bake on middle rack for 55-65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  8. Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then lift out using parchment and transfer to a wire rack. Cool completely before slicing (about 1 hour).

Notes

Do not overmix the batter; a few lumps are fine. Use room temperature eggs for best results. Check for doneness at 50 minutes. Let bread cool completely before slicing to prevent crumbling. For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend with xanthan gum. For dairy-free, use plant-based milk.
