Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups (150 grams) Rice Krispies cereal
  • 10 oz (280 grams) regular-sized marshmallows
  • 3 tablespoons (42 grams) unsalted butter, softened
  • Red food coloring gel (about 10-15 drops)
  • Blue food coloring gel (about 10-15 drops)
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • Non-stick spray or butter for greasing the pan
  • Optional: Sprinkles or edible stars for topping
  • Optional: Natural food coloring alternatives like beet juice powder for red and spirulina powder for blue

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray or butter and set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt 3 tablespoons (42 grams) of unsalted butter, taking about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add 10 oz (280 grams) of marshmallows to the melted butter and stir constantly with a rubber spatula until completely melted and smooth, about 5-7 minutes. Lower heat if burnt spots appear.
  4. Remove the pan from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of vanilla extract.
  5. Quickly divide the melted marshmallow mixture evenly into three separate bowls.
  6. Add red food coloring gel to one bowl and blue food coloring gel to another, stirring well to achieve desired shades. Leave the third bowl plain (white).
  7. Add 2 cups (50 grams) of Rice Krispies cereal to each bowl and gently fold until fully coated, being careful not to crush the cereal.
  8. Press the red mixture firmly but gently into the bottom of the prepared pan. Layer the white mixture evenly on top of the red, then add the blue mixture as the top layer. Use a buttered spatula or wax paper to press down each layer evenly without smashing.
  9. Let the layered treats cool at room temperature for at least 1 hour, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to speed up setting.
  10. Once set, cut into squares or fun shapes using cookie cutters. Use a warm, damp towel to clean the knife if it sticks.

Notes

Use gel-based food coloring to avoid adding extra liquid which can affect texture. Work quickly when dividing and coloring the marshmallow mixture to prevent it from setting prematurely. For vegan versions, substitute butter with coconut oil and use vegan marshmallows. Press layers gently to maintain the crunchy texture. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
