A giant, soft-baked chocolate chip cookie cake shaped like a football, topped with chocolate frosting laces. This accidental game day showstopper is deceptively easy to make and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 23 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an oval baking dish with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the sides.
  2. In a large bowl, beat softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips with a rubber spatula until evenly distributed.
  7. Transfer dough to prepared pan and press into an even layer. Slightly wet fingers to prevent sticking.
  8. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
  9. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until edges are golden brown and center is set but still soft. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then lift out and cool completely.
  10. For frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low. Add milk one tablespoon at a time until pipeable. Mix in vanilla.
  11. Once cookie is completely cool, transfer frosting to a piping bag or Ziploc bag. Pipe a straight line down the center, then short angled lines across to create football laces.

Notes

Chilling the dough is crucial to prevent spreading. Use room temperature ingredients for best results. For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend. The cookie tastes even better the next day. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
